How to Block All Links Other Than Clip Links on Twitch
How To Block All Links Other Than Clip Links on Twitch
Have you ever had someone make a clip on stream and they weren't able to share it in chat because you've got all links turned off? Have you ever wanted to allow JUST Twitch clip links through, but nothing else just to be safe? I have great news for you! In this guide, I will teach you how to allow JUST the links you want to be allowed in your chat and nothing else!
On Twitch, unfortunately, we deal with bots sometimes who will put links in your chat which are unsafe and that you don't want anyone to click. For some people, the safest and first option is to simply turn off any links at all, but when you do that, nobody can put clips they make in chat. That can be frustrating for both you and them as the culture on Twitch is very heavily tied with sharing clips.
Lets get into this guide on how to fix that!
Step One - Turn off "Block All Hyperlinks"
On Twitch's end, there is a setting you may have turned on that blocks all links from coming into your chat in the first place. If this setting is turned on, none of the steps past this one will work.
To locate this setting, go to Creator Dashboard > Settings > Moderation > Chatter Permissions > View Advanced Settings > Block Hyperlinks. Be sure to turn that OFF.
Step Two - Login to Stream Elements
As I mentioned, there is probably more than one way to do this, but this is the way I am familiar with and use myself. Go to Stream Elements and log in to the streamer side with your Twitch account. Once there, go to the left side menu and open the "Chatbot" section. From there, go to "Spam Filters" and the second one down is called "Link Protection"
Turn on the Link Protection button and click the arrow to open the menu details.
In the "Allowlist" section, any link you add to that section will be allowed through in your Twitch chat now. To be specific, you only need to add the first part of a link for this to work. As an example, if you want to allow a Twitch clip link, you just need to add "https://clips.twitch.tv" and you don't need to add any more than that. Any link that STARTS with that will be allowed through.
Step Three - Add your moderation preferences
The last step in this guide is to add your moderation preferences in the Link Protection menu. There are extra options you can add to make it more customized to your preferences and needs.
I personally, for example, have a 10 second timeout for a user that posts any links that aren't allowed and an exception for anyone who is a VIP or higher. That means anyone who is a VIP or higher can post any links in chat. I personally allow that because I give VIP out to people at my discretion and it can't be bought with donations or channel points. I find that a safer method as I only give it to trusted community members who are consistently around.
Last but not least, you can add an announcement that will happen in chat when a link that is not allowed gets blocked. I chose to have mine explain what links are allowed, and to please not send links that are not.
Now you're all set to have people share clip links in your chat with ease and peace of mind! If this post helped you, please consider sharing with a fellow streamer you know to help them too!
